Memorable concerts in Sydney

From classical to jazz, rock and pop, Sydney hums with live music. The exciting events calendar is full of wonderful shows all year, including during Vivid Sydney and the Sydney FestivalThe Basement is an iconic Sydney club with live music since 1977, a favourite with fans who love its intimate shows.

The Metro, on George Street near Town Hall Station, has been rocking with heavy-metal, indie and alternative bands for more than 20 years. For edgy performance art and live music, go to the Oxford Art Factory, in Darlinghurst, a warehouse-like venue with multiple performance spaces and stages.

For bands and pizza, head for Frankie’s Pizza on Hunter Street in the city centre. A stroll away is the World Heritage-listed Sydney Opera House, which has everything from classical concerts with Australian and overseas orchestras to rock ‘n’ roll. You can even tour this architectural jewel.

Physique, at Oxford Art Factory, Sydney

Since opening its doors in 1908, the Enmore Theatre in Newtown is the oldest-running music venue in New South Wales and hosts a wide range of live music events. Another big music venue is the Hordern Pavilion in Moore Park, home to the Sydney Cricket Ground and the Fox movie studios.

Set among Darling Harbour’s restaurants is ICC Sydney, which has a compelling calendar of concerts in its theatre. Another concert venue is the nearby Sydney Lyric. For stadium-size concerts, check the events calendar for shows at ANZ Stadium and Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney Olympic Park.

Sufjan Stevens at Vivid LIVE, Sydney

You’ll find smaller live music venues in pubs, bars and clubs across Sydney, such as jazz favourite Venue 505 in Surry Hills. In arty Marrickville visit the performance space The Red Rattler. The World Bar, on Bayswater Road in Kings Cross, serves famous teapot cocktails and live music, theatre and cabaret.
